Affiliate Marketing Jargon

Affiliate Marketing - this is a profit sharing arrangement between a
online merchant and an online affiliate marketer. The affiliate marketers site
features the merchants products or services with a unique ID link to the
merchants site. Each sale/  lead etc from the affiliate marketer site earns
commission from the merchant.

Search engine - is an indexed database of web pages. Search engines
use spiders or crawlers to find web pages all over the web. the pages they find
are copied into an organised index. when someone searches on the web the search
engine looks in its index for pages with content matching the search query. Each
search engine has its own formula for matching search queries with indexed
content.

Merchant - An affiliate marketing relationship consists of a merchant
who owns the goods and affiliates who have been granted the right to
promote the goods on behalf of the merchant. The merchant could be an individual
or a company. The merchant is the highest level in the affiliate marketing
chain.

Click through - If you have a link on your web page to another site
and someone clicks on that link during viewing it is called a click through. If
the link is displayed i.e the page is viewed then it is known as an
impression.

Click through rate  -How many times the link was clicked compared
to how many times it was viewed expressed as a percentage. Or in other words -
how many times out of 100 impressions (viewings) was the link clicked on.
